Speculations about Applications of Identification Theory
Around thirty years ago, Ahlswede/Dueck laid the foundation of "Identification Theory" which addresses the following problem: One sender is providing information to many receivers which are not interested in the full information of the sender but only in the answer of a yes/no question (think of a lottery: no one wants to know the full winning data, just "did I won?"). It turns out that answering yes/no questions is "exponentially faster" than transmitting complete information. Starting from this scientific result, the talk will "speculate" about the occurrence of identification phenomena in our life. Can research on identification strike a rich gold vein? We will think, for instance, about the difference between fast and slow thinking in Kahneman's work...
